Prayer Calendar on The West Wing

IN OCTOBER 2002, the Prayer Calendar showed up in The West Wing episode titled "Debate Camp." Here's a brief edited transcript:

The President's press secretary, C.J. Cregg, played by Emmy winner Allison Janney, is approached by a sixty-something man, Bill Stark, as she prepares for the next day's presidential press conference . . .

Bill: "I'm with Kingspeak magazine. We're a magazine that reaches over 600,000 evangelicals. . . . I wanted to tell you that on December 10th, all 600,000 will be praying for you. [hands C.J. a card] Once a year, we identify the 365 most influential people in media and we assign each of them a calendar day and we pray for them."

C.J.: "I really don't know what to say in response to that sort of kindness."

Near the very end of the show, the prayer calendar is revisited. It had been a bad week for the White House, and a little huddle of the President's staff is crying the blues. The chief of staff speaks out . . .

Leo: "Can anyone report anything good?" [short pause]

C. J.:
"600,000 evangelicals are praying for me. So we have that going for us."

Leo:
"What the h#&& is that all about?"

C.J.:
"It's true. A guy gave me this card. 365 people in media."
Leo: "Who are the others?"

C.J.:
I don't know. Let's see . . . Hugh Hefner, Dan Imus, Howard Stern. All the late night guys. This—1 . . . 2 . . . 3—is the editorial board of the New York Times. This is not a good list. This is a list of people going to hell! They aren’t praying for me because they like me—it's because I'm doomed to eternal damnation!"

Sam:
"Well, if you weren't, it would be a waste of prayer."

C. J.:
"You’re on the list, too, pal."

Sam:
"Can I see that?"

The scene ends on that note of humor.
