America’s “Wisdom Downgrade”

Wisdom for the Trenches

There was a great hubbub nationally over the downgrade of the U.S. credit rating by Standard and Poor’s. The impact of this decision had far-reaching national and global impact. It hurts not to have a AAA credit rating!

There is another rating that nobody officially follows. It’s America’s “wisdom rating.” If the collective decisions of politicians, financial gurus, and media gatekeepers were rated AAA to FFF on how wise they were, I wonder what the nation’s rating would be. Would it show a decline in public confidence?

Wisdom is an incredible national resource. Foolishness is a people’s destruction. The primary way to rate foolishness is that is “doesn’t work,” because wisdom is wired into the universe by the Creator. Those at any level in society who think and act like fools are like a dog chasing a car at 48 feet on a 50-foot leash–thinking there are no consequences to the exciting exercise of his freedom. Wisdom is the leash that will ultimately bring him–and all of us–up short by revealing our wrong-headed thinking and behavior.

Our society’s greatest threat is not nuclear holocaust, rampant terrorism, or global economic meltdown. It is a major loss of wisdom in public life–the rise of folly. Americans–intoxicated by the pursuit of freedom and happiness–are increasingly thinking and acting in ways that are bringing them bondage and misery. I’ve worked for more than three decades inside Hollywood, a world in which folly is often exalted, and wisdom despised.

It doesn’t have to be this way…in Hollywood or America. There is a body of wisdom literature available to us that provides insights for dealing successfully with all of life’s challenges–a wisdom that transcends time, culture, language, and status in life. It is found in the timeless truths of the Judeo-Christian Scriptures. It is codified in user-friendly form in the Hebrew Book of Proverbs by a man legendary for his wisdom, ancient Hebrew King Solomon. It protects us from the terrors of life like the trenches protected World War I soldiers from oncoming enemy attacks.

So, set aside all you have previously thought about living life to the full, all you have been taught by philosophical correctness, and all your peers are telling you is surely the best way to think and act. Blindly implement the teachings of Solomon illustrated in these columns. You’ll find it divine wisdom for life’s trenches. Following he principles will help you avoid a major “wisdom downgrade” and maintain your AAA Wisdom Rating.

Hi Larry: I just returned from a two week short term mission trip to our ‘Sister Church’ in Dauis Bohol, Philippines. I have spent four days flying with media in the form of movies, newspapers, magazines and catalogs. Your post poses a point that few her in the USA seem to be aware of. While we are among the richest and most influential nations in the world we are increasingly modeling the proverb of Solomon ‘ A beautiful woman without discretion is like a gold ring in a pig’s snout” May God open our eyes.
