Is it lost…like Atlantis?
Filmland, Tinseltown, La-La Land, and even Babylon–Hollywood has been called many names, but the diverse monikers haven’t altered the fact that there is probably no more recognizable “brand” in the world. From chewing gum in the former Soviet Union to greasy spoon cafes in rural Kenya, the name “Hollywood” conjures images of excitement, glamour, and instantly recognizable celebrities from the silver screen.
When Mastermedia’s leadership began to explore the spiritual, religious, and moral dynamics of show business in the early eighties, it became clear that many media power brokers were “lost.” If “lost” can be defined as, “Living by a set of guidelines that systematically dismantle your life,” much of Hollywood is lost. For millions of people who have come west in more than a century to pursue a dream, the Tinseltown experience has turned nightmare. Often the cause is the complete abandonment of any personal faith in God or Jesus Christ.
Then, there are the people of faith. Reacting to the people and media product that offend their traditional Judeo-Christian values, they have typically become angry, strident, and condemning. One exec at a powerful TV company said, “‘Angry Christian’ is a redundancy; it’s the only kind we know.”
Building respectful trust relationships with power brokers in film and TV in Los Angeles to provide service, support, and encouragement has been the focus of Mastermedia. This is done through professional counsel regarding the Christian community and personal counsel regarding matters of faith. Personal mentoring for Christian executives took place in conference rooms at CBS Television City and CBS Studio City, Sony Columbia, and Warner Brothers for more than twenty years. Prayer has been mobilized internationally for the top 365 most powerful in media for more than two decades. For four years, Mastermedia brought hundreds to a key Hollywood venue to provide spiritual support for show biz leaders through the National Media Prayer Breakfast.
To those of us at Mastermedia International, every person and community has pockets of lostness. Our big picture focus includes the belief that, with God’s help, all of us can be found.
